Miraculous Catch of Fish

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”

“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. -- Luke 5:4-7 NLT

Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee and needed a place to stand and preach because of the crowd. Simon was tending his nets after fishing all night and not catching anything. Simon let Jesus use his boat and listened to the message.

Luke doesn't say what Jesus taught that day, but most likely he was teaching the Good News of God's abundance (Matthew 11:4-6, Luke 6:38, John 10:10). That would explain why Simon was willing to go back out on the lake even though he knew that fish were rarely caught in the daytime in the clear water of the Galilee. Only faith would motivate a seasoned professional to lay aside years of fishing experience to go back out and fish. And faith comes by hearing God's Word (Romans 10:17).

This was Simon's business and he needed to catch fish to earn a living. Jesus knew what Simon needed both professionally and spiritually because God knows what you need even before you ask (Matthew 6:8). But He needs your faith to bring all His promises true in your life. When Simon planted his seed (boat) into Jesus' ministry, that seed was multiplied back as a net-breaking, boat-sinking load of fish!

As you read and meditate on this miracle, remember that faith still works. All things are possible if you believe.
